Goosey Fair
Tavistock’s famous Goose Fair returns on the second Wednesday of October, continuing a tradition that dates back around 900 years.
These days, the town is taken over by around 200 stalls, food and drink, fairground rides and thousands of visitors.
And, yes, there are still geese, although you’ll need to look beyond the main fair to find them!
The fair began as a medieval Michaelmas livestock and trading fair, with geese supposedly becoming part of the tradition because they could be bought around Michaelmas and fattened up in time for Christmas.
And if you want to know how a fair featuring dancing bears, a boxing kangaroo and a Wall of Death evolved into the Goose Fair we know today, we've got the full story (see link below)!
