      <image:title>Features - Smile! Tara doesn’t do dull and boring - Meet Tara</image:title>
      <image:caption>Tara Pile was born in Plymouth "a very long time ago" - her words, not mine! - although she spent 18 years living in over the border in Cornwall. Her career path since then has been anything but predictable. "I joined the military - the Royal Air Force - in 1998 as an aircraft engineer," she tells me.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Features - Smile! Tara doesn’t do dull and boring - Out of Africa</image:title>
      <image:caption>Tara spent nearly five years in Africa, where she started a family, before returning to the UK just before Covid in 2020. Africa still owns a piece of her. "I like Plymouth," she tells me when I ask her to compare the two. "I think it's a beautiful city." Then she pauses.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>"I had to climb out of the side of the ship and go down a rope ladder onto a RIB, which is like a speedboat, across the sea to another ship and then climb up the side of that one." And somewhere between one ship and the next, Tara had an idea.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Features - Smile! Tara doesn’t do dull and boring - More than just a smile</image:title>
      <image:caption>"We cover Devon and Cornwall," she tells me. "We go as far up as Exeter at the moment, over to Barnstaple and then down as far as Bodmin and Wadebridge into Cornwall. And everywhere in between." But it's not geography that determines whether someone’s a suitable patient. "We’re basically aiming to look after people who cannot get to a dentist, are too scared to go, or are physically or mentally immobile."</image:caption>

      <image:caption>And then there’s Flossy. A 34-year-old purple caravan. Tara bought Flossy through Facebook Marketplace, from a couple who’d planned to go travelling but had been unable to because of medical challenges. Her husband, a former Royal Marine, apparently assumed they'd bought themselves a caravan for holidays. He couldn’t have been further from the truth!</image:caption>

And then, after 25 years away, she came back. She set up her business, The Dental Hygenius, in April 2024, knowing she was leaving the military, and based herself in Brixton, just a few miles outside Plymouth.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Features - Dancing bears, boxing ‘roos, folk songs - and geese! - Tavistock Goosey Fair</image:title>
      <image:caption>The 900-year-old Tavistock tradition, with a very good Plymouth connection, takes place on the second Wednesday of every October. On that day, Tavistock is taken over by hundreds of stalls, food and drink, fairground rides and thousands of visitors at the annual Goose Fair. And, if you look hard enough, you might even find a goose. So how did it all begin?</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a8729a42c828b2dddedda23/3691c684-f585-44e1-a26c-169da0fdeb2c/Goose+Fair+Geese.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Features - Dancing bears, boxing ‘roos, folk songs - and geese! - It all started with Michaelmas</image:title>
      <image:caption>The origins of the fair stretch back to the early 12th century. In those times Tavistock would hold a Michaelmas fair around the feast of St Michael and All Angels on 29 September each year. It was a place to trade animals and goods, but also an important social occasion. And somewhere along the way, geese became an important part of the proceedings.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Features - Dancing bears, boxing ‘roos, folk songs - and geese! - Then Plymouth got involved</image:title>
      <image:caption>Tavistock's first railway arrived in 1859, with a branch line connecting the town with Plymouth. It transformed the way people could get to the fair - and during the 1860s, it's estimated around 2,000 people travelled from Plymouth to Goose Fair by train. So if you think of Goose Fair as a handy little day trip from Plymouth, you're following a tradition that’s more than 150 years old.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Features - Dancing bears, boxing ‘roos, folk songs - and geese! - All the fun of the fair</image:title>
      <image:caption>The entertainment at Goose Fair became increasingly colourful during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Travelling performers, theatrical attractions, fortune tellers and sideshows joined the stalls. There were performing animals, including dancing bears and lions, while later generations could enjoy boxing booths, the Wall of Death and other decidedly hair-raising attractions.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Features - Dancing bears, boxing ‘roos, folk songs - and geese! - Sweet success</image:title>
      <image:caption>Today, the streets are lined with around 200 stalls and community stands, while the fairground brings traditional rides and children's attractions to the town. There's food, drink, crafts, sweets, clothing, curiosities and just about everything else you might expect to find when hundreds of traders descend on a West Country market town. Which means the modern Goose Fair is a fascinating mixture of old and new.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Features - When the lights go out - How many did you find?</image:title>
      <image:caption>Have you spent the summer hunting lighthouses? We have! If you've found yourself wandering around Plymouth with a map in one hand and your phone in the other, stopping every few minutes to photograph a brightly decorated lighthouse, you're certainly not alone. Since July, St Luke's Guiding Lights trail has turned Plymouth into one giant treasure hunt, with more than 40 full-size lighthouse sculptures appearing at locations around the city and beyond.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a8729a42c828b2dddedda23/fb760923-1d8f-4d27-a5b0-265469699a50/St+Luke%27s+Lighthouse+Portrait+01.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Features - When the lights go out - More than just a treasure hunt</image:title>
      <image:caption>There’s been another really lovely side effect, too. Stand beside one of the lighthouses for just a few minutes and someone will almost inevitably come and stand beside you. They might be satisfying their addiction too, stopping to find out what a lighthouse is doing in the middle of the city, or simply wondering what on earth you're doing. Before long, complete strangers are chatting, exchanging notes about how many they've found, asking which is their favourite and comparing how many are still on their list. Perhaps that's one of the nicest things about Guiding Lights. It hasn't simply encouraged people to explore Plymouth; it has given them something to talk about when they get there.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Features - When the lights go out - The elephant in the room</image:title>
      <image:caption>This isn't St Luke's first venture into the world of giant public art. Back in 2019, Plymouth was invaded by colourful elephants as part of Elmer's Big Parade. When the 40 large Elmer sculptures eventually went under the hammer, they raised an astonishing £323,750 for St Luke's. According to the hospice, that was enough to provide more than 350 families with hospice care at home.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Features - The dragon guarding Plymouth Sound - The long way home</image:title>
      <image:caption>Have you ever looked out to sea, watched the ships returning to port and wondered why they all go the ‘long way’ around Drake’s Island? Naval vessels, Brittany Ferries, visiting ships and the big commercial traffic all seem to follow much the same route, sweeping around Drake’s Island before heading towards Devonport. And there’s a very good reason for that.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a8729a42c828b2dddedda23/1dd95eb3-a1a6-49b0-a8c5-5f7dd8e9639c/Ships+of+the+Sound.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Features - The dragon guarding Plymouth Sound - First: The Bridge</image:title>
      <image:caption>The stretch of water between Drake’s Island and the Cornish shore has a rather wonderful name: The Bridge. It’s not a bridge in the conventional sense; the name refers to a shallow, rocky area beneath the water - a natural feature that has made this stretch of The Sound difficult for larger vessels to navigate. Today, much of it’s hidden beneath the water.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Features - The dragon guarding Plymouth Sound - Plymouth’s natural defences</image:title>
      <image:caption>For centuries, Drake’s Island has occupied a strategically important position in the middle of Plymouth Sound. The reason for its importance is simple: the island sits beside the deep-water approach to The Hamoaze - a broad tidal estuary formed by the River Tamar where it meets Plymouth Sound - and Devonport. The Bridge creates a much shallower alternative route into The Hamoaze. And that geography matters.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Features - The dragon guarding Plymouth Sound - A boom across The Sound</image:title>
      <image:caption>The concrete teeth weren't working alone. The military defence system also included a boom - essentially a substantial barrier intended to prevent hostile vessels from simply forcing their way through the water. The Plymouth Defence Scheme of 1911 envisaged a boom stretching from Drake’s Island towards the Rame Peninsula, with anti-submarine obstacles - including the ‘dolphin or shark teeth’ - forming part of the defensive arrangement on the island side.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>They're not particularly impressive. They're not another magnificent fort like Drake's Island. Most of the time, you can't even see them. But when the tide falls far enough, they appear and suddenly a piece of Plymouth's military history rises out of the water. Plymouth's Dragon's Teeth.</image:caption>

Beyond them, the landscape stretches across Dartmoor and, on a clear day, you can glimpse views of the 643ft television and radio mast at North Hessary Tor on the horizon. It’s difficult to imagine a scene less like a wartime airfield.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Features - Runway Rubble - The aftermath</image:title>
      <image:caption>The aftermath must have been almost impossible to comprehend. Buildings that had stood for generations had been reduced to smoking shells. Streets were choked with brick, stone, timber and twisted metal. Homes, shops, churches and businesses had simply ceased to exist. But even as Plymouth began to clear the destruction, something else was taking shape nine miles to the north.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>It wasn't simply a fighter base, either. No. 276 Squadron's Air Sea Rescue operation was based at Harrowbeer, helping to recover aircrew from the sea and from aircraft accidents. At times, more than 2,000 people were serving on the station. (Image shows RAF Fighter Command, 1939-1945. No. 276 Squadron at Harrowbeer.)</image:caption>

      <image:title>Features - Runway Rubble - The price of war</image:title>
      <image:caption>Unfortunately, not every story connected with Harrowbeer ended happily. Flying was dangerous, and accidents occurred. Aircraft were lost, lives were lost, and the airfield’s Air Sea Rescue personnel were sometimes called upon to recover crews from crashes far beyond the perimeter of the station. By 1944, Harrowbeer was playing its part in preparations for Operation Overlord.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Features - How to spot a Janner - Time marches on</image:title>
      <image:caption>Being a Janner isn't just about words and accents. It's about memories too. Perhaps you remember a Plymouth that would be almost unrecognisable to someone who has only known the city in recent years. A Plymouth that seemed to have cinemas on every corner and pubs that were busy all the time. Names may have changed, buildings may have disappeared, but the memories haven't.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Features - How to spot a Janner - The Spirit of Disco</image:title>
      <image:caption>Then there are the things that still make Janners sigh. Plymouth Airport was once part of the fabric of the city, providing a convenient link to the rest of the country and beyond. It closed to commercial flights in 2011, and its loss is still lamented by many of the locals. Perhaps you remember something even more recent. Before Plymouth became Britain's Ocean City, the welcome sign on the A38 proudly announced: “Welcome To Plymouth - Spirit of Discovery”. Until somebody decided to improve upon it. Mysteriously, and possibly under cover of darkness, the letters V, E, R and Y repeatedly disappeared.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Features - The wonders of Plymouth Hoe - Celebrating a Plymouth Icon</image:title>
      <image:caption>There are some places in Plymouth that are so familiar, we tend to take them for granted. We walk past them, meet friends beside them, and take photos of them when visitors come to stay. And then, every now and again, we stop and remember just how remarkable they actually are. Smeaton’s Tower is perhaps the best example. Standing proudly on Plymouth Hoe, it’s become one of the most recognisable symbols of the city. But the lighthouse you see today has travelled a rather extraordinary journey to get there. Smeaton’s Tower was originally constructed on the Eddystone Reef, around 14 miles south-west of Plymouth.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>There was a rather smart-looking visitor alongside the Barbican Landing Stage today (Wednesday 9 September 2026). SeaDream II is one of the two luxury yachts operated by SeaDream Yacht Club - and at just 104.8 metres long, she's a very different proposition from the huge cruise ships that occasionally loom over Plymouth. But she still dominated the pontoon today.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Features - A glamorous surprise at The Barbican - A growing part of Plymouth's waterfront economy</image:title>
      <image:caption>SeaDream II is also a reminder that Plymouth's relationship with the cruise industry continues to grow. The city welcomed 15 cruise ships during the 2025 season, bringing more than 15,000 passengers and crew to Plymouth. Cattewater Harbour Commissioners say those visits generated around £1.3 million in additional economic spend for the city.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>If you were on the waterfront today (Sunday 6 September 2026), looked out across Plymouth Sound and thought, "What is that huge vessel silhouetted on the horizon?", you're not alone. The enormous grey shape beyond the breakwater was HMS Queen Elizabeth, one of the Royal Navy's two Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers - and the UK's current Nation's Flagship.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Features - ‘Royal’ visit from ‘Nations Flagship’ - Why was she here?</image:title>
      <image:caption>Queen Elizabeth left Portsmouth on Saturday evening (5 September) to begin a three-month programme of training and operations around the UK and northern Europe. She's also currently serving as NATO's command ship for the Allied Response Force – the first time one of the Royal Navy's Queen Elizabeth-class carriers has taken on that role. So Plymouth got a rather impressive glimpse of her as she began her latest deployment.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Thursday 3 September was a grey, misty day in Plymouth - and as the mist and drizzle rolled in over The Sound, a rather imposing Dutch visitor quietly made her way around Drake’s Island and into The Hamoaze, on her way to Devonport Dockyard. She's HNLMS Johan de Witt (L801), a Royal Netherlands Navy amphibious transport ship – and at 176 metres long, she's not exactly easy to miss!</image:caption>

      <image:caption>The ship is named after Johan de Witt, the 17th-century Dutch statesman, and carries the pennant number L801. And if you were wondering whether that enormous flat deck really is a helipad… yes, it is! She can carry up to six helicopters. Another fascinating visitor to Plymouth – and one that makes our waterfront look pretty small by comparison!</image:caption>

The magnificent Dutch tall ship Morgenster spent five days visiting Plymouth, giving people the opportunity to step aboard one of Europe's most beautiful traditional sailing vessels – and, for those taking part in sailing experiences, to head out onto the Sound.</image:caption>

Among the military vessels, the yachts and ferries, that striking metallic-hued beauty is the Aviva, a 98.4-metre (322 ft) luxury superyacht that arrived in Plymouth! <image:title>Plymouth Sounds - The man behind the music - Josiah J Manning</image:title>
      <image:caption>Speak to almost any musician in Plymouth, about the local music scene, and it won't be long before this name crops up. Josiah J Manning has been quietly helping to shape it for almost two decades. Positive Plymouth paid a visit to his studios in Plympton to find out more about the man behind the music. You’re acutely aware before you arrive that you're about to chat to a man who plays piano, guitar, drums and bass, who’s worked as a producer and an engineer, who owns his own recording studio and has worked with local and international touring musicians, and with major and independent labels. You also know he's worked on three Top 40 albums. I mean just how many strings does one man need for his bow?</image:caption>

      <image:title>Plymouth Sounds - The man behind the music - Born into music</image:title>
      <image:caption>Sitting in the studio he built with his grandfather 18 years ago, Josiah explains how his musical journey started at a very early age. “I started playing piano when I was two, I believe. I used to sit on mum's lap and pick out melodies on the piano.” His dad was a musician too, and Josiah’s mum would often take him along to his dad’s gigs when he was very young.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Plymouth Sounds - The man behind the music - London calling?</image:title>
      <image:caption>There was a time when aspiring musicians were told that London was the only place to be if they wanted to be successful. Josiah briefly toyed with the idea of moving there when he was in his teens, but decided against it. “There's always been that thing of you have to be in London to make it in music. “But it's not the case anymore because social media has transformed the industry.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Plymouth Sounds - The man behind the music - Small cog, big machine</image:title>
      <image:caption>On a windowsill at Momentum sit awards from some of the projects Josiah’s worked on, including recognition for three Top 40 albums. “I'm incredibly proud of that achievement. And I'm incredibly proud of the band that I've done that with.” But the awards don't seem to have changed his attitude towards his role. “I love playing on stage and I love that sort of connection with an audience,” he says.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Plymouth Sounds - The man behind the music - Be yourself, be different</image:title>
      <image:caption>For all the amazing variety of things Josiah does, what he wants to do next is very clear. He wants to help musicians make music that sounds like them. And he thinks that's becoming increasingly important. With artificial intelligence beginning to make its mark on music production, Josiah believes creativity, individuality and the human element really need protecting.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Plymouth Sounds - The show must go on! - Alex Hart</image:title>
      <image:caption>Thirty-five-year-old Alex Hart has been making music in and around Plymouth for almost half her life. From playing pubs and clubs in the city to touring America with some of the biggest names in British music, her career has taken her a long way from her Mid-Devon roots. These days, she has a new travelling companion on the road - her young daughter, Wren.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Plymouth Sounds - The show must go on! - From Plymouth to dance charts</image:title>
      <image:caption>One night, after the serious recording work was done, Alex suggested the band have a bit of fun. “I was really obsessed with this song called Wish I Didn’t Miss You by Angie Stone,” she says. “And I said, ‘Oh, let’s just have a go. I really want to sing it.’” They'd had a few drinks so started jamming.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Plymouth Sounds - The show must go on! - An unexpected invitation</image:title>
      <image:caption>By the time Alex was about 23, she was working constantly as a musician. Then she was asked to sing on a recording session at Middle Farm Studios in Newton Abbot. “I'd never heard the music before,” she says. “It was a prog record.” The session was completed in a day. Alex went home and looked up the man they'd been recording for.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a8729a42c828b2dddedda23/25d36378-9cab-41d8-9a63-075a08a068d6/Alex+and+Seth+Minack.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Plymouth Sounds - The show must go on! - A curry, a pint and an audition</image:title>
      <image:caption>But perhaps the most wonderfully Plymouth story of all happened much closer to home. In fact, it happened downstairs at the very venue we're chatting in now. Alex was working at the B-Bar at the Theatre, serving food and pulling pints, in what was also a Thai restaurant. Devon folk star Seth Lakeman walked in one day to order a takeaway.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a8729a42c828b2dddedda23/241047f9-8989-404c-acfa-82b0e56f70ef/Alex+and+Seth+Performing.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Plymouth Sounds - The show must go on! - From bar to stage</image:title>
      <image:caption>It seems particularly appropriate that the Seth Lakeman story happened here. The Barbican Theatre is an intimate little venue, with a main auditorium of around 100 seats - plus a bar downstairs with its own smaller performance space. It is the sort of theatre where even if you sit in the back row, you still feel part of what's happening on stage.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a8729a42c828b2dddedda23/9e1562c9-8362-4341-ae47-c72af6e24e5c/Alex+and+Wren.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Plymouth Sounds - The show must go on! - Inspiring others</image:title>
      <image:caption>Throughout her career, Alex says she's been told that having a family would make life as a touring musician very difficult. “I've had so many people tell me if I want to have a family, it's going to be challenging. ”If you do, it's going to really affect your career and your life.” And that bothered Alex. “I was thinking, well, it's like any other job. I need to earn money. This is just what I'm good at and what I do.” Wren was born last year, and Alex has taken her on six tours already. “She's fit in really well,” she says. “It's hard, you know, but it's something that is just, yeah, the most magical time.”</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a8729a42c828b2dddedda23/a14941ad-6acc-4ac8-a5e4-481f3eed3257/Alex+Barbican+Sweet+Shop.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Plymouth Sounds - The show must go on! - The show must go on</image:title>
      <image:caption>There’s one small complication with today's interview. Alex isn't feeling 100% which she laughingly blames on Wren. She's full of the lurgy, and tomorrow she's heading off on yet another tour. We had offered to postpone, but Alex wasn't having any of it. She's a working musician, she has shows to play, and a sniffle isn't going to stop her doing the job she loves.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Plymouth Sounds - From open mics to the international music scene - Tom Baker</image:title>
      <image:caption>Tom’s been part of the Plymouth music scene since he was knee-high to a grasshopper. Like plenty of young musicians, he started out at open mic nights, finding his feet, meeting other musicians and discovering where music might take him. “For me, having that platform when I was younger definitely helped me with my confidence,” says the Plympton singer-songwriter.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Plymouth Sounds - From open mics to the international music scene - Finding your way in Plymouth</image:title>
      <image:caption>Tom reckons Plymouth still has plenty to offer musicians. There are pubs, clubs, festivals and open mic nights, while the rock, punk and metal scene around Mutley Plain and the Underground continues to thrive. But he also sees a gap. Several venues have disappeared over the years, and Tom would like to see more places where younger musicians can make the jump from open mic nights to performing their own original material.</image:caption>
