The Bright Side
Van Morrison is coming to Devon… and one of music’s true legends is showing no signs of slowing down.
Some artists are lucky enough to have hit songs. Some have long careers. Very few become part of the soundtrack to our lives.
This October, Sir Van Morrison brings his latest UK tour to Plymouth Pavilions (and Torquay’s Princess Theatre the following evening), giving Devon audiences the chance to see one of the most influential singer-songwriters of the past six decades.
Born George Ivan Morrison in Belfast on 31st August 1945, Van will celebrate his 81st birthday later this month. It’s an age when most people have long since retired, yet he continues to record new music and perform to audiences around the world.
Music was always in his blood. His father owned one of Northern Ireland’s finest collections of American blues, jazz and gospel records, and those sounds helped shape the distinctive style that has made Van Morrison one of the most recognisable voices in popular music.
He first came to prominence in the 1960s as the lead singer of the band Them, recording the enduring classic Gloria, before embarking on a solo career that has produced more than 40 UK Top 40 albums.
Along the way he has won two Grammy Awards, been inducted into both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and received a knighthood in 2016 for services to music and tourism in Northern Ireland.
His catalogue is packed with songs that have stood the test of time, including:
Brown Eyed Girl
Moondance
Into the Mystic
Have I Told You Lately
Days Like This
Crazy Love
Domino
Bright Side of the Road
They’re songs that have featured at weddings, in films, on long drives and at family celebrations for generations.
Van belongs to a very select group of singers who continue to entertain well after retirement age, including names such as Paul McCartney, Rod Stewart, Willie Nelson, Lulu and Tom Jones; artists whose love of performing has kept them in demand.
Whether you’ve been a fan since the vinyl era or you’ve only recently discovered his music, this is a rare opportunity to see one of the true giants of modern songwriting performing live here in Devon.
And a very Happy Birthday for 31st August, Van!
